PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

International Azerbaijan Tour

In 2011, the International Azerbaijan Tour enters its second quarter-century: this fact alone is proof of the success of Iran’s major stage race.

Over the years, the International Azerbaijan Tour has become an important fixture on the UCI Asia Tour calendar, earning its rightful place alongside the continent’s biggest and most important races.

The role of this event in the world of cycling is two-fold: it goes without saying that it provides a perfect occasion for riders to gain precious points towards the UCI Asia Tour ranking. In parallel, it plays an extremely important part in the development of our sport. This high quality race captures the imagination of fans and spectators both in Iran and throughout the Asian continent. Iran’s own Ghader Mizbani Iranagh has clocked up five overall victories, including last year when he went on to take third place in the UCI Asia Tour ranking. What an example to his compatriots and what a tribute to the International Azerbaijan Tour.

But let us not forget that the exploits of the riders would not be possible without the commitment of all those working behind the scenes. No international event can last 26 years unless the organisers have perfectly understood what it takes to ensure the smooth running of a race of this calibre. The fact that the International Azerbaijan Tour is where it is today is largely thanks to the dedication of organisers, political and local authorities, sponsors and volunteers. Their contribution is essential and extremely valuable. On behalf of the UCI I would like to thank you all for your work and commitment.

I am looking forward to following this 26th edition, and I wish the very best of luck to all those participating in the 2011 International Azerbaijan Tour.

Pat McQuaid

UCI President
